Sept. 18 (UPI) — Saquon Barkley, Jaylen Waddle and Joe Burrow were among the star players injured in Week 2 of the 2023 NFL season.
NFL players injured Sunday will undergo examinations this week to determine the extent of their injuries and potential timelines for return.
Barkley sustained what appeared to be a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the New York Giants’ 31-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz.
Barkley totaled 92 yards from scrimmage and two scores on 23 touches in the victory. He was helped off the field with about 68 seconds remaining and did not return. Giants coach Brian Daboll did not provide an update on Barkley’s injury during his postgame news conference.
Giants offensive lineman Ben Bredeson also left the game early because of a concussion. Cardinals defensive lineman exited the game because of an arm injury.
The Giants (1-1) will face the San Francisco 49ers (2-0) at 8:15 p.m. EDT Thursday in San Francisco. The Cardinals (0-2) will host the Dallas Cowboys (2-0) on Sunday in Glendale.
Waddle was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth quarter of the Miami Dolphins’ 24-17 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday night in Foxborough, Mass. He totaled a game-high 86 yards on four catches in the victory.
Dolphins running back Salvon Ahmed sustained a groin injury and left the game early. He totaled 41 yards from scrimmage on six touches.
Patriots defensive back Marcus Jones left the game because of a shoulder injury.
The Dolphins (2-0) will host the Denver Broncos (0-2) on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Patriots (0-2) will battle the New York Jets (1-1) on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.
Burrow told reporters he aggravated the calf strain he sustained at training camp during the Cincinnati Bengals’ 27-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in Cincinnati. He completed 27 of 41 passes for 222 yards, two scores and an interception in the setback.
Burrow said he “tweaked” his right calf in the fourth quarter. He limped off the field after the final whistle and later told reporters he is “day by day.”
“We’re going to have to wait and see,” Burrow said. “I’m not sure how it’s going to feel the next couple of days. It’s pretty sore right now, but no telling how it’s going to feel so I think we’re going to take it day by day.”
Bengals safety Nick Scott left the game early because of a concussion. Ravens wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. sustained an ankle injury and was ruled out in the second half.
Beckham logged three catches for 29 yards in the win. Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters that he doesn’t consider the injury serious.
The Ravens (2-0) will host the Indianapolis Colts (1-1) on Sunday in Baltimore. The Bengals (0-2) will host the Los Angeles Rams (1-1) on Sept. 25 in Cincinnati.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson sustained a concussion in the first half of a 31-20 win over the Houston Texans. He did not return to the game.
Richardson completed 6 of 10 passes for 56 yards and ran for 35 yards and two scores before his exit. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew completed 19 of 23 passes for 171 yards and a score in relief of the rookie.
Colts center Ryan Kelly also left the game early to be evaluated for a concussion. The Texans (0-2) will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Chase Edmonds sustained a knee injury and did not play in the second half of a 27-17 win over the Chicago Bears. He totaled 12 yards on two carries. Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney sustained a knee injury and did not return. Bears safety Eddie Jackson was ruled out in the first half because of a foot injury.
The Buccaneers (2-0) will host the Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) on Monday in Tampa, Fla. The Bears (0-2) will battle the Kansas City Chiefs (1-1) on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo.
Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas was injured after taking a hit from Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson in the first half of a 35-33 victory Sunday in Denver. He was evaluated for a concussion.
Thomas totaled two catches for 22 yards and a score in the win. Jackson was ejected for his hit on the Commanders tight end.
The Commanders (2-0) will host the Buffalo Bills (1-1) on Sunday in Landover, Md.
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery injured his thigh and was carted to the locker room in the fourth quarter of a 37-31 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in Detroit. He did not return.
Montgomery totaled 73 yards and a score on 17 touches in the setback. Lions linebacker James Houston also was ruled out because of an ankle issue. Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen left the game early because of a shoulder injury.
The Lions (1-1) will host the Atlanta Falcons (2-0) on Sunday in Detroit. The Seahawks (1-1) will host the Carolina Panthers (0-1) on Sunday in Seattle.
Two games will take place Monday to wrap up Week 2. The Panthers will host the New Orleans Saints (1-0) at 7:15 p.m. EDT in Charlotte, N.C. The Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1) and Cleveland Browns (1-0) will kick off at 8:15 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
