Jan. 27 (UPI) — The Dallas Cowboys are expected to hire former Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus as their new defensive coordinator, a league source told UPI on Monday.
Eberflus was fired in December after the Bears logged a 4-8 start to the 2024-25 year. He went 14-32 in three seasons as Bears coach.
The Cowboys allowed the fifth-most yards and second-most points this season. They ranked 29the against the run and 17th against the pass under former defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who is expected to retire.
Eberflus served as defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 through 2021. He was a linebackers coach for the Cowboys from 2011 through 2017. He was the defensive coordinator at Missouri from 2001 through 2008.
He joined an NFL staff for the first time in 2009 when he was hired as linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns.
The Cowboys hired new head coach Brian Schottenheimer on Friday. Schottenheimer was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator the last two seasons.
Under Eberflus, the Bears allowed the sixth-most yards this season. They allowed the 12th-fewest yards in 2023. The Colts ranked inside the Top 10 for fewest points allowed three times under Eberflus. They also allowed the eighth-fewest yards under Eberflus in 2020.
