COSTA RICA
Frankly, I really like the place. Costa Rica has all the inept, dysfunctional bureaucracy required for folks to have figured out how to navigate their way around it.
It is a place of abundance when it comes to food and water (depending on location). It is geographically irrelevant, geopolitically inconsequential, has no standing military, a highly educated and extremely friendly citizenry, and is already showing signs of shifting from the UN-led, IMF-tarnished agenda.
I will have more to say about Costa Rica in the future, but here is what I had anticipated would happen.
As North America (US and Canada) continue to go through a fourth turning, many will leave the chaos, and Latin and South America are attractive — if only due to proximity and relative familiarity.
When North Americans go on holiday, it is often here.
Middle-class Americans go to Mexico — because it’s cheap, close, everyone speaks Inglés, and in the popular areas it is basically America light. More well-to-do North Americans will head to Costa Rica as they have always done. It is the safest country in LatAm and actually rather pricey.
The thing is, wealthy people, when looking for somewhere to actually decamp, aren’t interested in cheap. They value quality and are looking for very specific things.
In any event, that was in a nutshell part of my thesis, and while I was there a few weeks back, I had the opportunity to speak with an immigration official. This gent has been working in his role for 14 years — a long enough timeframe to have been able to see ups and downs in migration numbers.
What he told me was that ever since 2020 things have been nuts — a steady stream of North Americans coming. And not for holiday, as much as for permanent residence.
This, he tells me, is not abating. He described it as “not normal.”
Damn straight, it’s not. Look at what is going on in the world and tell me any of it is normal.
Additionally, over the last eight months, he tells me that an ever-increasing number of Europeans (specifically Germans and French) are now coming.
You know what our thoughts on Europe are, so….
I don’t see this trend abating. In fact, I think it’s going to go into hyperdrive when the next level of dumb-fuckery is thrown our way.
Like I said, I’ll have more on some things I’m working on in Costa Rica in due course, but what I want to point out is that the world is changing fast, and within a decade we’ll be looking back on it with awe at how different everything is.
That, my friends, is true convexity. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.
