Jan. 30 (UPI) — Former All-Star and NBA Finals champion Rajon Rondo was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm, drug paraphernalia and marijuana, an Indiana State Police spokesman told UPI on Tuesday.
Rondo was arrested and released Sunday in Jackson County, Ind. He will be scheduled for an initial appearance in the Jackson County Superior Court.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said Rondo was stopped Sunday on Interstate 65 for an “observed traffic infraction,” which led to officers finding a gun and the drugs and paraphernalia.
A caller reported a black 2022 Tesla “traveling recklessly on I-65 southbound” in Bartholomew County, Ind. A trooper then conducted a traffic stop once the car entered Jackson County and observed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, Wheeles said.
Rondo was taken to the Jackson County Jail, where he paid bond and was released.
He is not permitted to have a firearm under an emergency protective order filed against him in March. His new charges are all misdemeanors.
The 37-year-old spent 16 years in the NBA. He entered the league as the No. 21 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.
Rondo played for the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers.
He retired after the 2021-22 season, which he spent with the Lakers and Cavaliers.
Rondo, a four-time All-Star, was a 2011-12 All-NBA selection. He was a four-time All-Defensive Team selection who led the league in assists three times and steals in 2009-10. Rondo won championships in 2008 with the Celtics and in 2020 with the Lakers.
He averaged 9.8 points, 7.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals over 957 career appearances. He averaged a career-high 13.7 points in 2009-10 and 2012-13. He averaged a career-high 11.7 assists in 2011-12 and 2015-16.
