This year’s final IndyCar season race will move from the Nashville city streets to the 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway oval due to new stadium construction for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
Organizers of the Music City Grand Prix announced the move on Wednesday after reviewing construction plans and options to retain a course over the downtown streets for the September 15 event.
“With construction set to begin for the new Titans Stadium, the Grand Prix operations team knew they’d be faced with new challenges, knowing that the course used for the first three years would have to change dramatically,” said race operations chairman Scott Borchetta.
“With several key locations around the stadium not available as in years past… we simply don’t have the proper space needed by the race teams nor the proper access for downtown businesses and residences to execute the world-class event.”
The Titans will have a say in when the race returns to Nashville streets around the new stadium.
The Nashville Superspeedway is a D-shaped oval where IndyCar staged races from 2001-2008, with New Zealand’s Scott Dixon winning the last three events contested there.
