Powerball jackpot rises to $785M for Monday night; fourth largest in history

Sept. 25 (UPI) — The Powerball jackpot for Monday night’s drawing stands at $785 million, the fourth largest sum in the game’s history.

No one matched Saturday’s five white ball numbers of 1,12, 20, 33 and 66 and red Powerball number 21, increasing the jackpot to its current total.

Monday’s jackpot has a cash value of $367 million, Powerball officials said. If the winner selects the annuity option, they will receive an immediate payment then 29 annual payments increasing by 5% each year.

Powerball tickets are $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold.

While the new jackpot is the fourth largest in Powerball history, it is still a ways off from the record $2.04 billion, won last November by a winner in California. A California winner also won the prize in July.

Earlier this year, a single winning ticket was sold in California for a $1.08 billion prize, the third-largest jackpot in the Powerball history.

America’s other national lottery, Mega Millions, will have its drawing on Tuesday with a jackpot worth $230 million. That game has already produced two billion-dollar winners so far this year. On Aug. 8, a player in Florida won $1.602 billion and a ticket purchased in Lebanon, Maine won a$1.34 billion prize.
