The Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler over the team’s poor start to the season, the Raiders said in a statement.

The decision, announced late Tuesday, comes after the Raiders slumped to a 26-14 defeat to Detroit on Monday which left the team at 3-5 in the AFC West division.

“After much thought about what the Raiders need to move forward, I have decided to part ways with Josh and Dave,” Raiders owner Mark Davis said. “I want to thank them both for their hard work and wish them and their families nothing but the best.”

The Raiders promoted linebackers coach Antonio Pierce to slot in as interim head coach for the reminder of the season.

“The Las Vegas Raiders are committed to undergo a comprehensive search for a head coach once the season is complete,” a team statement said.

Similarly, Champ Kelly will step up to take over from Ziegler as interim general manager until the end of the season.

McDaniels, 47, was brought in as head coach of the Raiders in early 2022, joining after a long stint as the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator.

The Raiders went 6-11 in his first season in charge during which McDaniels came under scrutiny for his team’s inability to close out tight games.
