Reigning NHL Most Valuable Player Connor McDavid is expected to miss the next one to two weeks for the Edmonton Oilers after suffering an upper-body injury, the club announced Sunday.

Oilers captain McDavid was seen grabbing his left side after skating up the ice and though he finished his shift, the 26-year-old Canadian centre didn’t return after leaving the ice with 4:20 remaining in Edmonton’s 3-2 overtime loss to Winnipeg.

Edmonton will play Tuesday at Minnesota and host the New York Rangers on Thursday but the injury means McDavid, top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, could miss the Oilers’ NHL Heritage Classic outdoor home game against Calgary at Commonwealth Stadium next Sunday.

“It appeared to be muscular more than anything to me as I watched during the play,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said.

McDavid, the NHL scoring champion for three consecutive seasons who also won the NHL’s MVP award for the third time last season, has two goals and six assists in five games for the Oilers this season.
