Sept. 21 (UPI) — Russian missile strikes throughout Ukraine killed at least two people and injured about a dozen, officials said.
Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on Telegram that two people were killed in a strike in the region early Thursday.
“Terrible night for Kherson. There are dead and wounded. Around 3:40 a.m., the Russian army set fire to the residential quarters of Kherson. The Russians targeted the dormitory building while people were still sleeping. As of this hour, two dead civilians are known. Their identities are currently being established,” Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Services said that another strike in the city of Cheraksy injured 11 more people and forced 13 people to be evacuated. One person was also rescued from rubble.
“We will remind you that the hotel building was destroyed today as a result of a rocket attack on the city. As a result, there was a fire, as well as the burning of trading pavilions in the market,” the Emergency Services continued.
Two more people were injured in Russian strikes on Kharkiv and a building was damaged in Lviv.
Russia fired 43 missiles at Ukraine, 36 of which were destroyed by air defenses, according to commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Sergiy Popko, said 20 Russian missiles were shot down over the capital. Falling debris from the intercepted missiles injured seven people on the ground.
The attacks come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the United States to meet with representatives.
The missile strike is the most significant since Aug. 15.
