U.S. Capitol Police headquarters evacuated over ‘suspicious vehicle’

Sept. 19 (UPI) — Capitol Police headquarters were evacuated Tuesday following the sighting of a “suspicious vehicle” parked in the area.

“The United States Capitol Police (USCP) is investigating a suspicious vehicle after a K9 indicated interest on the vehicle in the 100 block of D Street, NE. USCP Headquarters is being evacuated out of an abundance of caution,” the Capitol Police posted to X Tuesday.

The evacuation remained in effect early Tuesday afternoon.

Capitol Police is in charge of providing security for the Capitol grounds, as well as the elected representatives who work there.

In April 2021, a Capitol Police officer was killed when a man rammed his vehicle into the fence surrounding the Senate.

In August 2021, Capitol Police helped successfully negotiate the surrender of a man who parked his vehicle on the steps to the Library of Congress while claiming to have an explosive device.

In October 2021, Capitol Police had to remove a man from a vehicle he had parked near the Supreme Court building after having made menacing comments on social media.
