It’s winter and winter means a surge of seasonal flu infections in the northern hemisphere. This year, however, Americans are looking at not just a surge in seasonal flu infections but it is coupled with a surge in three other infections:
A quadruple-whammy of viruses are hitting the US as millions go back to work after the holidays, data shows.
Official figures reveal that infections cause by flu, Covid, RSV (a respiratory illness that causes the cold) and norovirus (sometimes called the stomach flu) all started to surge over the Christmas period, when families gathered to celebrate.
And experts say figures will only continue to rise over the coming weeks as the US heads into the peak period of its annual flu season.
Four viruses are circulating in the U.S., sparking concerns of a possible "quademic."
Influenza, COVID-19, RSV and norovirus are all at "very high levels" around the country, according to Samuel Scarpino, director of AI and life sciences and professor of health sciences at Northeastern University in Boston.
"We are in the middle of a very serious situation with respect to circulating pathogens," he told Fox News Digital.
The Elderly and Infants Most At-Risk
The reporting from Fox News makes it clear that the old and the young are both at risk when it comes to the current round of viral infections:
"Of the four viruses in widespread circulation, all post a unique risk of severe illness in the elderly," Dr. Jacob Glanville, CEO of Centivax, a San Francisco biotechnology company, told Fox News Digital.
RSV poses unique risks for infants, experts agree.
"For young infants, breathing through their nose is imperative in order to eat, and RSV can cause severe amounts of nasal congestion," Perry warned. This congestion can disrupt babies’ ability to consume enough calories, he added.
The Vaccines Aren’t Working
We all know just how ineffective the disastrous COVID-19 vaccines are but this year it is clear the flu vaccine is just as ineffective as its COVID counterpart.
According to the University of Minnesota, this year’s flu vaccine was entirely ineffective against the flu in South America (who experience the seasonal flu before those of us here in North America):
The effectiveness of the seasonal flu vaccine against hospitalization among high-risk groups during the 2024 seasonal flu season in five Southern Hemisphere countries was low (35%), down from 50% in 2023
Even the Centers for Disease Control is admitting that the experience of our neighbors to the south is likely to be replicated here in North America during this fall and winter:
"While Southern Hemisphere data cannot predict exactly what will happen in the Northern Hemisphere, what we can say is that if we see similar influenza viruses (strains or clades) circulating this season in the Northern Hemisphere, we can expect similar vaccine effectiveness against influenza-related hospitalizations," lead author Erica Zeno, PhD, epidemic intelligence service officer with the CDC’s Influenza Division, told CIDRAP News in an email.
This flu season, the United States is using trivalent (three-strain) vaccines with the same components as those in Southern Hemisphere vaccines, Zeno said.
