Sept. 20 (UPI) — The Philadelphia 76ers signed All-NBA star center Joel Embiid to a three-year extension worth $192.9 million, a source familiar with the pact told UPI on Friday. The pact will keep Embiid under contract through 2028-29.

Embiid confirmed the signing Friday on Instagram. The 76ers also announced the multi-year extension, but did not disclose the terms of the deal.

Embiid declined his player option for 2026-27 as part of the agreement. His extension includes a player option for 2028-29.

“Philadelphia is home,” Embiid wrote on Instagram. “I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do.

“You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started!”

Embiid, 30, signed a four-year, $213.2 million extension with the 76ers in 2021. The seven-time All-Star, five-time All-NBA selection, three-time All-Defensive team selection and 2022-23 NBA MVP averaged a career- and league-high 34.7 points per game last season, but was limited to 39 games because of a knee injury.

He averaged 27.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 blocks per game through his first 433 appearances for the 76ers. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft earned the league scoring title in 2021-22 and 2022-23, but was not eligible for that honor last season because he did not reach the required 58 games played.

“Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game,” 76ers owner Josh Harris said in a news release. “We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come.

“Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely — if ever — seen.

“He is integral to this franchise’s quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home.”
